Everyone likes to go on vacations in their time off of work. It’s only natural. After all, why would you want to spend more time in places that you already know about when you could discover something new and exciting. Unless you’re from the Caribbean, then it is a great place to visit for any length of time. I recently got back from yet another cruise (my favorite way to use my spending money), and there were a lot of establishments that I feel deserve more praise. Here are my personal thoughts on each one.
I’ll be focusing on the Virgin Islands for the most part, as my cruise stayed docked here for a while. This gave me a chance to try the majority of the restaurants and bars nearby. The Longboard is up first, as it is the most memorable place from my entire trip. This establishment is found in Cruz Bay in the Virgin Islands. The first thing that comes to people’s minds when they think of the Caribbean is definitely not affordability.
However, it is my goal to change your mind about that. I cannot delve into specifics as I do not have the menu memorized (yet), but believe me when I say that The Longboard outdoes a lot of the competition when it comes to price. Drinking isn’t very affordable if you plan on doing it on a regular basis, but if you enjoy something then why should it have to cost you so much? Another thing that The Longboard deserves praise for is their food. Bars can have good or bad food, depending on the place and whether or not that is something that the management feels they want to specialize in.
A lot of bars in the Caribbean have food that contains some form of beer, like pretzels with beer in the dough or beer cheese on the side. I have to say that beer food isn’t my favorite, but The Longboard puts effort into the way their food tastes. Because of this, I can’t seem to resist theirs. My favorite dish to get is the shrimp and avocado bruschetta, because seafood doesn’t get much better when you’re in the middle of the ocean. If you read the Yelp reviews, a lot of the people who write amazing online reviews for The Longboard will mention the “Frozen Painkiller” as something to behold.
I have had a few different ones, and they are just as good as everyone says they are. It’s an alcoholic drink, so don’t bring your kids to this restaurant in the Virgin Islands thinking that they will be able to try one. Unless you feel like getting kicked out, of course. Top this with a great selection of different drinks, and you come out with an amazing establishment in the Virgin Islands. In addition, The Longboard has some very respectful staff. Even in the face of busy hours and easily frustrated customers, they manage to keep a cool head and remain calm.
You know, there is something special to me about eating regularly at restaurants where the staff treats you like family. A homely restaurant will always attract more customers than one where staff is only friendly to customers, in my opinion. There are plenty of great things that I could say about The Longboard, but I think this should be enough to convince any of you stragglers.
Bars aren’t everything, however. Even in an adult-oriented place like the Caribbean, there are still plenty of destinations for people who are only interested in food. Dog House is a still a sports bar, but they serve some of the better burgers that I have eaten in the Virgin Islands. Or any U.S. territory, for that matter. Dog House is also located in Cruz Bay in the Virgin Islands, so you will have a difficult time finding bad restaurants in this area.
If you’re looking for recommendations on which items to order, it’s safe to say that I have a few. I realize that it doesn’t sound like something a bar should specialize in, but I always make sure to get tater tots as a side for my meal. Something that the chefs do with the tater tots makes them amazing, in my opinion. As for “entrees”, I have ordered the mushroom burger time and time again and it has always made me happy. For one, it’s very filling, so you don’t even really need to order the tater tots in addition.
But you can tell from the taste alone that Dog House’s chefs don’t mess around when it comes to the quality of their food. They put genuine care into the food, which is surprising considering Dog House is a sports bar. My main problem with sports bars is the noise level, but you won’t find any rambunctious people here. They wouldn’t be able to afford a trip to the Caribbean, anyways. Less noisy people will lead to more positive online reviews, and I appreciate when others also enjoy my favorite restaurants.
Finally, if you are interested in a place where you can eat, drink, and relax at the same time, look no further. Lucky Chops lounge is just south of Cruz Bay in the Virgin Islands, so it shouldn’t take you too long to travel to any of these places. Lucky Chops Lounge is in a nice location that offers a great view of the water, and it’s always fun to watch all the different ships passing through. The only ones that I could recognize were charter boats. I only remembered how they look because I had such a great experience with my Caribbean Sailing Charters a few years ago.
If multiple years have passed and I still recognize them, you better believe the service was good. As for Lucky Chops Lounge, I appreciate that the chefs went with diversity on the menu instead of playing it safe, because it really paid off in the end. A major thing that some restaurants have been lacking in lately is sanitation, but Lucky Chops Lounge is always at the top of their game and maintains their restaurant well.
The first thing that I noticed when eating here for the first time was the relaxed environment. Contrary to popular belief, it is entirely possible for a restaurant to be both busy and stress-free at the same time. I have seen it firsthand. Again, it should not come as a surprise that Lucky Chops Lounge has more than a few great online reviews that detail how nice it is.
